Jakhoo Temple, The Ridge & The Mall

Image
This particular post is about the places which we went to see on the last day of our trip, i.e 28th of January. And since these places don't really come under a particular city or village, I am not writing about what these places are. With that said, I will jump right into the places of interest. Jakhoo Temple & Jakhoo Hills Jakhoo Hills is a series of hills which is situated 2.5 KM from the Ridge, Shimla at a height of 2,455 meters ( 8,000 feet ) above sea level. It is Shimla's highest peak. Jakhoo/Jakhu Temple is a temple of Lord Hanuman which famously houses a 108 feet tall Hanuman idol. From the top, the total height comes out to be 8200 feet from sea level. This idol is said to be the highest point in Shimla. While the temple itself is not an epitome of architectural marvel per se, this 108 feet tall idol is truly impressive.  The entrance of Jakhu Temple. The stairs take you to the idol. View of Jakhu hills. Zoomed in view of 108 feet tall Hanuman idol, a...

A disappointing journey to Mashobra & Naldehra

Image
27th of January was the date when we went to see Mashobra and Naldehra. There wasn't much to explore there because like Kufri , most of the the attractions can be accessed only if you are ready to ride a horse or mule. We didn't know this beforehand, so our excitement died sooner than I had wanted to. But still, there were a few highlights, which I liked a lot! What is Mashobra Mashobra is a town & a small hill station (yet another) which falls under Shimla district. Places of interest Regional Horticultural Research & Training Station Either my driver himself didn't take me to other places here like wild-life sanctuary & Craignano or these places are simply too risky to go when it has snowed. Anyway, he took me to RHRTS which is a research station for horticulture & apple trees. There is an entrance ticket of 50 Rupees per adult. If you are not sure whether it is worth the money or not, I am posting some of the photos so that you get an idea ...

From Kufri to Chail

Image
Continuing from my last post about Kufri , I will now take you to Chail which happened to be quite an interesting place. Full of tall Deodar trees & monkeys ;-) What is Chail? Chail is a hill-station situated around 44 KMs from Shimla. Places of interest? Chail Palace : - It used to be the summer residence of Maharaja of Patiala but has now been turned into a hotel. Having seen the Royal Palace of Amsterdam (which has been termed eighth wonder of the world), I found the palace a bit dull. Its not that grand & massive if I compare it with the one in Amsterdam. But if I overlook that, Chail Palace indeed looks beautiful from inside. There is an entrance ticket of 100 Rupees per adult, which I found odd. The palace is already running a business in form of a hotel & people already pay various taxes directly or indirectly whenever they come to Shimla. Fun fact - A particular scene of the movie 3 Idiots was shot here. There are some beautiful chandeliers ins...

Exploring Kufri

Image
I went to Kufri & Chail on 26th of January 2018. It had already snowed there 2 days ago, so there was a lot of snow on the road. Weather was quite chilly despite the bright sunshine. It was -7 degree Celsius (minimum) on that day, so can imagine the kind of cold we had to brave :-) In this post, I am only going to mention Kufri since including Chail will make this post long & boring. What is Kufri? Kufri is a small hill-station situated around 20 KMs from Shimla. This place is famous for its scenic beauty ( more so when it snows ) & adventure activities like Skiing. Places of interest? Green Valley On the way from Shimla (National Highway 22), you will see an area full of Deodar & Apple trees with beautiful view of mountains in back-ground called Green Valley. Below is a photo I clicked when we asked our driver to stop on the Highway. You can see Apple trees in the foreground. Green valley & Apple trees. Another one showing the tall De...
